Crashes and slide-offs

From Decatur County Sheriff Bill Meyerrose

As the weather forecasters correctly predicted, Decatur County received a large snowfall
in a very short period. Roads became very slick and treacherous, creating very difficult
driving conditions.
Between the hours of 4:00 PM on Friday, February 16, 2024 and 8:00 AM on Saturday,
February 17, 2024, all first responders in Decatur County were kept extremely busy
responding to a high volume of traffic crashes. During that time period, deputies with the
Decatur County Sheriff’s Dept. responded to twelve (12) property damage crashes,
thirteen (13) slide offs and two (2) crashes with injuries, one of which was a semi tractor
trailer on its side.
All first responders in Decatur County, including Decatur County Communications,
Greensburg Police Dept., all Decatur County Volunteer Fire Dept.’s, Decatur County
EMS, Decatur County Highway Dept., and our local towing companies are to be
commended for their quick responses to all of these crashes, attention to injuries and
cleanup.
Drivers need to remain cautious as they travel, as roads remain slick in some areas.
