The Decatur County Community Schools Board of Trustees met on May 8, 2024, at 6 pm.
The meeting began with approval of the April 10, 2024 meeting minutes, claims, and payroll.
The board approved four field trips throughout the district.
The board approved four resignations, 1 medical leave, and 41 appointments including Summer School Teachers & Staff.
Rob Smith, North Decatur County Elementary School Principal, presented Dave Sell with the Extra Effort Award. Rob stated that Mr. Sell has been teaching for 43 years and has been a leader throughout his entire time teaching.
Debbie Reynolds, North Decatur Jr.-Sr. High School Principal, presented Steve Stirn with the Extra Effort Award. Debbie said that Steve is always willing to volunteer and be a helping hand. Mr. Stirn goes above and beyond to maintain relationships with staff, parents, and students.
The board approved Chartwell’s Food Service bid, This was the only bid received during the bidding process. It was noted that the costs remain competitive with last year’s prices.
Dr. Jarrod Burns, Superintendent requested the approval of the 2024-2025 Handbooks for North Decatur Elementary School and South Decatur Elementary School. Both handbooks were unanimously approved.
The board approved all student fundraisers and $9,600 in donations throughout the school district.
South Decatur Jr-Sr High School received approval to dispose of approximately 100 books that were either moldy, damaged, or had not been checked out in over 10 years. South Decatur Elementary School received approval to dispose of a piano that is too old to be tuned.
Mrs. Debbie Reynolds reported on a unified track meet, a successful academic team meet. Senior Scholarship Night on May 16th, High School Awards on May 17th, Jr. High School Awards on May 21st, an all-school field day, and graduation on May 31, 2024. She also said North Decatur Jr-Sr High School has moved from #81-#24 in the state. Nick Messer, Assistant Principal of North Decatur Jr-Sr High School reported that as of May 6, 2024, ND Jr-Sr HS is officially a STEM certified high school.
Rob Smith reported that they held a successful Walk-a-Thon fundraiser raising over $32,000, a 6th-grade graduation, and North Decatur Elementary School is now in the phase of developing a STEM Certification. Jeremy Sherman, Assistant Principal at NDES said they are in the early stages of Preschool planning and hope to have a preschool ready by the fall of 2025.
