Letter to Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration

Congressman Pence Sends Letter to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration

Washington D.C. – Congressman Greg Pence (R-IN) and Congressman Rick Crawford (R-AR) led 25 of their Republican colleagues in sending a letter to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) urging that they change the course of their proposed rule that would limit motor carrier exemptions during declared disasters.“The trucking industry has always been a vital partner to federal, state, and local governments during declared emergencies by delivering critical supplies, fuel, and other materials to those in need,” said Congressman Pence. “The FMCSA’s proposed rule will unnecessarily limit their opportunity to respond and inevitably delay or deny vulnerable communities from getting crucial supplies. During time-sensitive disasters, the federal government should leverage our truckers’ ability to help, instead of adding more bureaucratic delays that could prevent life-saving deliveries from getting to those who need it.”“Our nation’s commercial drivers always rise to the occasion in times of disaster and play a crucial role in transporting supplies to the people most in need. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the transportation sector was critical in moving medical supplies, groceries, fuel, and other basic needs. This FMCSA rule proposed without any tangible data suggesting it’s needed will significantly hinder our commercial drivers from assisting with disaster relief and would deeply impact any rehabilitation efforts,” said Congressman Crawford.“The Energy Marketers of America thanks Congressmen Greg Pence and Rick Crawford for leading this important letter to FMCSA to highlight concerns over the proposed rule that would impact motorists especially when they need to get out of harm’s way,” said EMA President Rob Underwood.
