Decatur County Commissioners Meeting Recap

The meeting began with approval of October 6th meeting minutes, claims, and payroll claims.

Todd Houk from the Highway Department reported that his team continues to perform general maintenance throughout the county. He announced that Bridge 63 is now fully open with no restrictions. Additionally, 350W was repaved last week due to damage caused by the railroad. Todd noted that he will be working with the county attorney to submit the repair costs to the railroad company in an effort to seek reimbursement.

He also shared that the previously open position in his department has been filled, and the new hire is doing well. A brief discussion was held regarding preparations for winter weather, during which Todd stated that he plans to purchase 300 tons of salt for the upcoming season.

Judge Tim Day and Abby Harry from Court Services presented a request to distribute JRAC Opioid Funds. They emphasized the county’s proactive approach in supporting individuals early in life to help prevent future issues. The commissioners approved the proposed distribution plan.

In other business, the commissioners noted that they have received only one bid so far for snow plowing at the Annex. They are expecting two additional bids and plan to revisit the topic at the next commissioners meeting.

The commissioners also approved the VFW Veterans Day Parade Ceremony to be held on the south side of the courthouse lawn on November 11th.

Commissioner Jeremy Pasel provided an update on the Fairgrounds Community Building project, stating that progress is ongoing. They are currently waiting on the fabrication of the stairs, after which work will move forward quickly. Pasel also shared that the fundraising campaign has successfully raised $460,000 to support the project.
