Animal Care During Extreme Cold Weather Important Reminder for Residents
As winter brings colder temperatures to our area, it is crucial for all pet owners to ensure the safety and well-being of their animals. In accordance with Indiana Code IC 35-46-3-0.5, “neglect” of an animal can include leaving a dog or cat outside and exposed to excessive cold if proper protection such as straw or other bedding is not provided.
This applies regardless of whether the animal is restrained or kept in a kennel.
Recommended Shelter and Care
The Greensburg and Decatur County Animal Shelter staff strongly encourage everyone with outdoor pets to provide adequate shelter that protects them from the harsh weather. This includes using straw or other bedding materials, as well as ensuring your pet has access to extra food and water during periods of excessive cold. If you need straw for bedding, the shelter is available to help during business hours (Tuesday – Friday, Noon – 4 PM; Saturday, 11 AM – 2 PM).
How You Can Help Animals in Need
Residents are asked to assist the shelter in helping animals that are truly in need. If you observe an animal outside during extremely cold weather, please assess whether the animal requires intervention before contacting Emergency Services. Remember, animals may be outside temporarily to relieve themselves.
Allow a reasonable amount of time before making a call, as unnecessary reports can prevent Animal Control Officers and law enforcement from responding to genuine emergencies.
The Greensburg and Decatur County Animal Shelter deeply appreciate the care and concern shown by residents for all animals in our community.
