Updates from State Senator Jean Leising

Whitewater Canal Receives More Than $14 Million in Funding

Recently, the Whitewater Canal State Historic Site received over $14 million in combined funding approved by the Indiana State Budget Committee to repair and rehabilitate the area.

I have spent the past several years working hard with residents, community leaders and the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sitesto address concerns facing the site. With this funding, many upgrades to the Whitewater Canal will be made, including replacing the canal boat, stabilizing historic structures, rehabilitating the canal bed and more.

This is not just a win for the community of Metamora, this is a win for our whole state, as it means this important part of our state’s history will be preserved for years to come.

Fighting Illegal Immigration

Our country has experienced an increase in the number of dangerous criminals and illegal drugs. The federal government is finally taking action, but states must do more to assist in enforcing our immigration laws.

This year, I supported new laws to tackle illegal immigration that keep dangerous illegal truckers off Indiana’s roads and prevent welfare payments to illegal immigrants.

House Enrolled Act 1200 revokes CDLs for ineligible immigrants and requires an individual to pass an English skills test in order to operate a commercial motor vehicle in Indiana.

As your state senator, I will always prioritize protecting Indiana residents.

Suspending the Gas Tax

Despite all the General Assembly has done to maintain our state’s low cost of living, one of the top issues on residents’ minds right now is the rising cost of gas. With this in mind, I support the Senate’s push to suspend the 17 cent gas tax last week.

Because of our efforts, Gov. Braun announced he will suspend the sales tax on gas for 30 days to provide some relief for Indiana residents. This move will save taxpayers about $50 million in the coming month.
