With a staffing requirement per station, Greensburg Fire Department followed policy by temporarily closing Station Two on Wednesday, August 5. The staffing shortage is the result of a combination of military deployment, family medical leave, and unfilled positions following the end of Honda’s Indiana Auto Plant agreement with the City of Greensburg to fund six fire positions, which concluded on July 1, 2026.
Additionally, the financial uncertainty created by Senate Enrolled Act 1 (SEA 1), enacted by the Indiana General Assembly and Governor in 2025, has prevented the City from confidently determining its ability to absorb all or part of the six positions previously funded through the Honda agreement in the 2027 budget.
As the City continues the 2027 budget process, discussions with Greensburg Fire Department leadership regarding staffing levels and the future operational status of Station Two remain a top priority. The decision to pause filling these positions is a direct result of the reduction in property tax revenue caused by SEA 1, which funds essential public safety services. More than 70% of the City of Greensburg’s General Fund is dedicated to public safety staffing and operations.
