
From the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department –
On 02/10/2023 at approximately 3:15 PM Deputy Daniel Dawson initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle in
the area of State Road 46 and E State St. The vehicle was known to law enforcement as being driven by
a Benjamin Munn, 48 of Flat Rock, Munn who had an active warrant for failure to appear involving an allegation of unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon issued by Shelby County. Munn’s serious violent felon status stems from a voluntary manslaughter conviction in Brown County from a 2012
arrest.
Munn initially stopped the vehicle, however after being order to exit the vehicle he sped away from the
scene. Law enforcement pursued Munn until he exited the roadway near the intersection of Taylor Rd
and Waycross Dr. Munn’s vehicle traveled down a slight downhill in the lawn of a residence then
crashed into the pond in the Sandy Hook neighborhood.
Munn exited the vehicle and was taken into custody as he came to shore. Munn was taken to Columbus
Regional Hospital for routine medical clearance then transported to the Bartholomew County Jail where
he remains in custody.
Munn’s charges involve allegations of: Resisting Law Enforcement level 6 felony, Criminal Mischief level 6
felony, Reckless Driving B – Misdemeanor and the outstanding Shelby County warrant.
The Bartholomew County Water Rescue Dive Team along with conservation officers from the
Department of Natural Resources were called to the scene to recovery the vehicle. The vehicle was
removed from the pond after a several hour long recovery operation. The Bartholomew County Water
Rescue Team consists of the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office and Columbus Township Fire
Department.
This is a preliminary investigation. All persons are innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
