On Thursday, September 10th over 300 5th graders came to the Decatur County Fairgrounds to learn about different aspects of agriculture and safety from local experts for the 33rd Ag Day. The Decatur County Ag Day is hosted by the Decatur County Soil & Water Conservation District and Decatur County Farm Bureau. The goal of Ag Day is to educate and expose students to safety and the many aspects of agriculture including past, present, and future technologies.
A few weeks before Ag Day, each 5th grader submits a design to be considered for the t-shirts that each student will wear to the event. This year’s theme was ‘250 Years of Freedom, Farming and Feeding America.’ It couldn’t be narrowed down to just one design, so two designs were combined into one! The winners were surprised in their classrooms the day before Ag Day. Congratulations to Olivia Hoeing and Lanceton Dickman from St. Mary’s School! These t-shirts were given to all 5th grade students, teachers, FFA members and presenters.
Local experts spent the day discussing animals, agriculture and safety. Students rotated through 21 stations learning about safety- electrical, gun, fire, lawn mower and first aid; animals- horses, dairy cows, beef cows, sheep, pigs, bees, poultry, meat goats, goat products, rabbits, animal nutrition and veterinarian, and other agriculture- FFA, grains, drones, and tractors. Each group of students was led by a local FFA member.
Ag Day is not possible without the time and support of all the volunteers, FFA members, presenters and local businesses.
