DCMH EXPANDS EMERGENCY BLEED AND FIRST AID TRAINING ACROSS DECATUR COUNTY

Greensburg, IN – October 7, 2025, Decatur County EMS and the Decatur County Memorial Hospital (DCMH) Staff Development team have been active throughout the community this fall, providing lifesaving education through Emergency Bleed education and basic first aid information. These efforts, made possible through support from the Hospital Foundation of Decatur County (Hospital Foundation) and their generous donors, are equipping local students, staff, and residents with the tools and knowledge to respond in emergencies until professional help arrives.

This fall’s outreach included participation in Farm Safety Day at the Decatur County Purdue Extension Office, where 28 attendees received training surrounding farm safety, as well as a large-scale event coordinated by the Decatur County Soil & Water Conservation District, where more than 300 fifth-grade students gained hands-on safety education.

A special emphasis was placed on Greensburg Community High School’s Ag, Construction, and Welding classes, where accidents can pose serious risks and emergency services may be minutes away. In total, 95 students and staff members completed Emergency Bleed training. Emergency Bleed Kits were also distributed to these classrooms, ensuring lifesaving resources are close at hand should an accident occur.

Decatur County EMS Manager Matt Myers said, “These trainings prepare students, teachers, and our community members to step in and save a life while EMS is en route.”

The training sessions cover three essential techniques:

1. Direct Pressure – using firm pressure to control bleeding.

2. Wound Packing – safely filling deep wounds to slow blood loss.

3. Tourniquet Application – learning proper placement and use of tourniquets for severe injuries.

In addition to training, each participant received a complimentary Emergency Bleed Kit or first aid kit with supplies designed to assist in an emergency.

Through recent Hospital Foundation funding, DCMH continues to expand this program, bringing vital training and resources to more classrooms, businesses, and community events across Decatur County.

“We offer both Stop the Bleed and Emergency Bleed Training to give schools, organizations, and community members options that fit their needs,” said Staff Development Coordinator Annie Swinney. “Whether it’s hands-on practice or classroom-based instruction, our focus is to help people feel prepared to respond in an emergency.”
