Decatur County Commissioners

The Decatur County Commissioners met on Monday.

Todd Houk gave an update on the highway department. The bridge on SR 46 has been reopened ahead of schedule. The detour roads did not get beat up too much during the road closure but will be assessed further. They are continuing bridge maintenance and adding waterproof membranes to several around the county. The work on Bridge 236 has begun and is including work on the sidewalk project that will go to Greensburg High School. Bridge 70 will need to be closed out according to its inspection. The bridge is on a low traveled road but they will still need to contact those impacted by the closure. The board approved to close bridge 70 and investigate repair costs. The board approved the purchase of 2 graders for the county highway department. Ordinance 2023-13 for the South Decatur Elementary School 30 mph school zone signs was approved.

Kenny Buening gave an update. There have been 62 inspections, 23 new building permits/plan reviews, 5 permit renewals, and 3 complaints. The owner of a nuisance property in St. Omar requested a cleanup extension. This is so that they can use Tox Away Day in order to dispose of tires. This will take place on September 9. This was approved.

Teresa Kovacich followed up on the storm damage that occurred on July first. This was damage to trees, a home, the parks, and equipment. The board approved for the $10,000 deductible to be paid for out of cumulative cap.

Patty Hensley gave an HR update. There were 3 new hires for the county and the website is progressing.

The commissioners discussed insurance for part time elected officials. The elimination of this could save the county over a quarter of a million dollars; however, the decision delay comes when considering both the surveyor and coroner are considered part time.

Richard Friend returned to the board to discuss an alley closure in Milford. Friend states that the deed has been proven to be a typo and that part of Carter’s property is actually theirs. This means that they own both sides of the alley. The board tabled this decision to give Carter a chance to come to the meeting and to retrieve the full deeds.
