Decatur County Community Schools Board of Education

The Decatur County Community Schools Board of Education met on Wednesday.

The board approved the appointments of: Theresa Crain – Corporation Bus Driver, NDHS: Crystal Hoover – Instructional Assistant, Sara Berger – 8th Grade Volleyball Coach, Madelyn Bohman – 7th Grade Volleyball Coach, Doug Bohman – Volunteer Assistant Volleyball Coach, Jeremy Meyer – Jr. High Football Coach, Brandon Litmer – Assistant Football Coach, Kylie Ricke – Assistant Varsity Volleyball Coach, Morgan Schofield – Instructional Assistant, NDES: Vicki Schrader – Medical Leave for Dave Sell, Megan Schildknecht – Moving from Part-time to Full-time, Gretchen Stone – Part Time Instructional Assistant, SDHS: Peyton Moore – PE/Health Teacher, Katelyn Owens – Guidance Registrar

Madyson Bryant – 2nd Shift Custodian, Raistlin Lee – SPED Instructional Assistant, Jessica Compton – Nurse, Dennis Cox – Medical Leave for Brandy Strand, Lily Rigby – 7th Grade Volleyball Coach, Abby Walls – 8th Grade Volleyball Coach, Mike Rahr – Jr. High Football Coach, Jordan AmRhein – Assistant Varsity Football Coach, Jonathan Shouse – Jr. High Football Coach, SDES: Breanne Helms – 5th Grade Teacher, Cindy Engelking – Instructional Assistant, Bethany Harcourt – Instructional Assistant, Kimberly Sherman – Title I Interventionist, and Madelyn Bryant – Kindergarten Teacher. The board approved the resignations of NDHS: Jade Miller – Instructional Assistant, NDES: Amy Gray – 3rd Grade Teacher, Angie Melugin – STEM Lab Instructional Assistant, SDHS: Laura Asche – School Nurse, SDES: Amy Henderson – Instructional Assistant, Vicki Dixon – SPED Teacher, and Amanda Reatherford – Instructional Assistant. The board approved the medical leave of NDES: Dave Sell- 6th Grade Teacher.

The board approved the following field trips: NDHS: 7th Grade to Kings Island in Mason, OH – May 17, 2024, SDHS: FFA – IN FFA Leadership Center June 7-9, 2024 and Cougar Company / Ground Zero to New York City – March 15-19, 2024.

The board approved the budget calendar. There was a presentation of the 2024 budget, capital projects fund, and bus replacement plan. The board approved the appointment of Bryan Jones to the Decatur County Community Scholarship Selection Committee. The board approved the 2023-2024 Teacher Appreciation Grant Policy.

South Decatur Elementary School presented their 5 extra effort awards. The recipients were as follow: Damon Wagner who has been huge technology assistance, Leann Porter and Wendy Coplin who are both in charge of the Backpack Program and truly care about the school and students, and Emma Shaver and Jennifer Chastain who put together tutoring during the summer and make sure the kids are ready for school.

South Decatur High School presented they extra effort award to the Director of Guidance Carrie Hess. Hess builds relationships, is a guide and mentor, multitasker, and conflict sorter for all middle school issues that are bound to happen. They do everything with a positive attitude and a smile.

All student fundraisers were approved. Donations totaling in $500 were approved.

Principal of SDHS Stewart Durham gave a report. They thanked the churches of Westport for all the food on Teachers Day. Seventh grade open house was a huge success and the best attended so far. Athletics are underway and they have 398 students physically in the building.

Principal of SDES Nicole Stone gave a report. Back to School Night was another huge success and they offered free backpacks, haircuts, and school supplies. They had 21 community partners for the event. They were able to redo the staff lounge as an appreciation. The Cougar Cubs Academy is up to 30 students and continuing to grow. The playground renovation is moving along and they have added ADA compliant equipment so that all students have an opportunity to play.
