Greensburg, IN – On June 23, Decatur County Memorial Hospital (DCMH) hosted a recognition ceremony where
Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital at Ascension St. Vincent (PMCH), presented the Patient-Centered Care of
Excellence Award to Matt Myers, Rachel Skirvin, and the Decatur County EMS (DCEMS) team for their
outstanding response during a recent pediatric emergency.
The team was honored for their quick response, clinical expertise, and steady leadership under pressure,
providing care that made a significant difference for one of the young patients. In a challenging situation involving
multiple individuals and families, the DCEMS team delivered urgent, high-quality care, protecting the lives of
several of our community’s youngest members. Their skilled clinical actions were vital in administering life-saving
treatment and contributing to a successful recovery in a complex medical emergency.
“This is only the second time we’ve presented this honor, which is reserved for moments where care goes above
and beyond and truly makes a difference,” said Abby Adkins, Pediatric Trauma Program Manager at Peyton
Manning Children’s Hospital at Ascension St. Vincent. “The care provided that day was extraordinary — a true
example of the teamwork, training, and compassion that define these providers.”
As part of the recognition, the team received challenge coins and certificates, acknowledging their dedication
and the lasting impact of their efforts.
The emergency involved multiple patients and required rapid coordination between several agencies.
Responders acted quickly to assess injuries, stabilize those involved, and prepare for the arrival of several
medical helicopters to support emergency transport.
“Decatur County EMS team works 24-hour shifts — away from their own families — to be ready when our
community needs them the most,” said Kristol Hadler, Outpatient Services Director at DCMH. “Their care that
day reflected not only technical skill but also a deep commitment to serving others. We’re incredibly proud of
Matt, Rachel, and the entire team for the professionalism and heart they bring to every call.”
The event also highlighted the strength of interagency collaboration.
“This was a true team effort,” said Matt Myers, DCEMS Manager. “We’re grateful for the partnership of
Greensburg Fire, Letts Community Volunteer Fire Department, the Decatur County Sheriff’s Office, Ascension
St. Vincent StatFlight Indianapolis, Ascension St. Vincent EMS, and others who supported patient care and
coordination on scene. Everyone came together with one goal — to protect lives and support families during a
critical moment.”
From high-pressure emergencies to everyday service, Decatur County EMS remains prepared to respond swiftly
and compassionately when every second counts.
This recognition serves as a reminder of the remarkable individuals, teams, and partnerships that deliver
exceptional care across our community each and every day.
