Decatur County Public Library Receives Grant from the Decatur County Community Foundation

The Greensburg Decatur County Public Library is thrilled to announce we have received an amazing $19,471 in funding from the Decatur County Community Foundation for the professional conservation treatment of a collection of glass plate negatives.

In 2012, a box of 389 glass plate negatives, dating from the 1860s to the late 1880s, was found in an attic of one of the buildings in downtown Greensburg and donated to the Greensburg Decatur County Public Library. This collection of ambrotypes offers portraits of various local people – men, women, children, Civil War veterans, and families. The funds will be used for conservation treatment on a portion of the photographic collection.

“We are so appreciative and excited to receive this support from the Decatur County Community Foundation to put toward the conservation of this important historical photograph collection. This collection offers a special window into our community’s past,” said Local History Librarian Jennifer Leach. “Once the photographs are cleaned and stabilized, they will be scanned and digitized to be available and enjoyed by the community for a very long time.”

The Greensburg Decatur County Public Library will be keeping a close eye on the progress of these glass plate negatives. To stay up to date and be among the first to see these amazing historical artifacts once they’re digitized, follow us on our social media pages!
