Decatur County Visitors Commission

The Decatur County Visitors Commission met on Thursday.

They had the most innkeepers tax in December than they ever had before. This is keeping the trend of innkeepers tax going up.

There was a new idea brought up to the board that at every meeting they would go around the room and each board member would bring up something going on in the community. Ryan Maddux mentioned the Board of Health moved to S. Ireland Street. Daniel Fayette mentioned that he plans to coach youth soccer and the Jr. High soccer team again this year. Anyone interested is welcome to get in touch and try out.

Erica Gunn and Daniel Fayette gave a marketing update. They are still doing the monthly newsletter. Their main focus lately has been the Bicentennial. The events for this year will be published on the website and so far they are up to 39 events. They are trying to get merch as well for the Bicentennial.

John Pratt gave a bicentennial update. They are trying to spend their funds frugally so that they can maximize what they have. There are new things being booked everyday and are looking forward to the next levels of publicity. They currently have sponsors with WRBI, Greensburg Daily News, and WTRE. Tuesday will be the first in the film series and Willy Wonka will be playing at the movie theater with a special cast member Q and A. The first lecture in the Cleo Duncan series will be Larry Ruth who has a new book on Decatur County and the railroads.

Director of Main Street Greensburg Tonya Downey gave an update on the past year. The beginning of the year was difficult to plan events due to COVID. In the district they had 25 building go through a facade update. The ambassador program went well, giving students real life experience working in the community. The holiday walk was very successful.

All additionals for the 2022 Budget were approved by the County Council. The YMCA 5-year Commitment Grant was approved. This is for $10,000 and they were already pre-committed before their grants for 2022 were no longer being given. The Youth Baseball Sponsorship was tabled.

The Main Street standing line item grant was approved. These grants are given after the review of how the previous year’s funds were spent. This was for $12,000.
