Extreme Heat Serves as Reminder to Protect Pets

The following information was gathered by the Greensburg Decatur County Animal Shelter

The Heat is miserable out. Imagine how bad it would be if you had fur! Here are some tips for pet safety through the hot summer days.

Limit outdoor activity to early morning or late evenings.

Have constant access to fresh cold water and quality shade such as trees or tarps. A dog house does NOT provide relief and can actually retain heat.

Never leave your pet in a vehicle unattended.Avoid hot surfaces, pavement is hot and paw pads can burn quickly. If you touch the surface and cannot keep your hand comfortably there for 5 to 10 seconds, its too hot for your pet.

Recognize signs of heat stroke:

All dogs and cats can suffer from heat stokes, but certain breeds like Pugs or Bulldogs struggle to pant efficiently and are highly susceptible to heat exhaustion. Watch for excessive panting and drooling, Bright red blue or purple gums, staggering, vomiting or collapsing.

If you suspect your pet is having a heat stroke, move them to safety in an air-conditioned area immediately. COOL SLOWLY, apply cool, not ice coldwet towels to the head, neck, and chest areas. DO NOT submerge them in water as this can cause shock. SEEK VET CARE. Heat strokes are life threatening emergencies!

Please remember it is the LAW to properly care for your pets in extreme heat and cold. If you see a Pet in distress, please call Animal Control or dispatch!
