Greensburg, IN – October 28, 2025, The spirit of teamwork and community was on full display this fall as the Greensburg Community High School Girls Volleyball team went above and beyond to make a difference in the fight against breast cancer. Through their creativity, dedication, and heart, the team, supported by the school’s Culinary Class, raised $600 for the Decatur County Hospital Foundation’s (Foundation) Pink Ribbon Fund.
The Culinary Class baked and decorated more than 550 cake pops, which the volleyball players sold at home games throughout the season. Players also selected friends and family members impacted by breast cancer to honor, giving the effort a deeply personal meaning. Their commitment inspired fans, families, and classmates alike to contribute generously.
All proceeds from the sale were donated to the Foundation’s Pink Ribbon Fund, which helps ensure that women in need can access clinical breast exams, screening mammograms, and additional diagnostic procedures, all provided at Decatur County Memorial Hospital, at no cost, based on financial eligibility.
In addition to the cake pop fundraiser, Greensburg Community Schools also collected $256 through pink buckets passed at athletic events, showing how small acts across the district can come together to make a big impact.
The funds were presented to Mandy Lohrum, Director of the Decatur County Hospital Foundation, by senior members of the volleyball team. Lohrum expressed her gratitude, sharing that these efforts not only raise critical funds but also raise awareness and hope for those navigating breast cancer in the community.
Jessica Barker, JAG Coordinator and Varsity Volleyball Coach, said she couldn’t be prouder of her team and community:
“These students poured their hearts into this project, from planning the sale to honoring loved ones affected by breast cancer. It was incredible to see their compassion and teamwork shine through. Our players, parents, and community all came together for a cause that touches so many lives, and I’m just so proud to see them using their platform to give back.”
Greensburg Community Schools initially approached the Foundation with the idea, hoping to find a way to make a greater impact during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Their initiative is a testament to how meaningful change begins when young people take action to support their community.
