GREENSBURG, IN – On Saturday, October 4, the community gathered at Liberty Park in Batesville for “Paws for a Purpose,”
a walk-your-dog fundraiser held in memory of Riley Duerstock. The event drew families, friends, and furry companions
together in celebration of Riley’s life and passion for both nursing and animals.
Riley, a nursing student and beloved dog lover, tragically lost her life in 2023 to a drunk driver. Prior to her passing, she
was a valued employee of Decatur County Memorial Hospital (DCMH), where her dedication and compassion left an
impact. Proceeds from the event support the Riley Duerstock Nursing Scholarship, created to honor her memory by
helping Batesville graduates pursue careers in nursing.
Attendees enjoyed a wide variety of activities, including a pie auction, snow cones, puppy chow, and a kindness counter
craft for children. Community partners such as the Indiana Donor Network and Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD)
joined in support of the event’s mission to raise awareness and give back.
Members of the DCMH team were also present with their dogs, offering apples from Doll’s Orchard, water for both pups
and people, and healthy snacks. Their participation reflected the hospital’s commitment to honoring Riley’s legacy by
supporting health, kindness, and community connection.
“Riley was an extraordinary young woman whose kindness and determination touched everyone she worked with,” said
Billi Bruner, DCMH HR Director. “We are honored to help carry her legacy forward through the Riley Duerstock Nursing
Scholarship and by continuing to support programs that give back to the community she loved.”
The event not only celebrated Riley’s life but also reaffirmed the community’s commitment to uplifting the next generation
of nurses and advocating for safe, healthy futures.
