Today we celebrated a fresh chapter for our community with a ribbon cutting at the Decatur County Community Garden! Nestled at 315 S. Ireland Street in Greensburg, this vibrant new space was born from a vision to better our community through healthy living, sustainability, and connection. From promoting fresh, local produce to fostering shared stewardship, the garden is planting seeds for a healthier future – one season at a time.

This project bloomed through the dedication of local partners including the Decatur County Department of Health, Decatur County Soil & Water Conservation District, Decatur County Recycling, the Greensburg – Decatur County Public Library, and Purdue Extension-Decatur County. Together, they’ve transformed an unused lot into a thriving hub where hands-on learning and shared stewardship will nourish both our neighborhoods and our environment.

Even better – the produce grown here is free to the public, giving residents greater access to nutritious, fresh-picked options that support healthier lifestyles and a stronger community. Already, the garden has produced 360 pounds of fresh food for our neighbors. In Decatur County, 13.5% of residents are food insecure – meaning they have limited access to the food needed to keep their bodies nourished. While the garden can’t feed that entire 13.5%, it is a meaningful step in the right direction toward addressing this need.

And today’s ribbon cutting is just the start. The garden will serve as a classroom and gathering place – hosting educational programs, composting initiatives, and seasonal events that will continue to grow its reach year after year. Over time, its impact will extend far beyond the fence line, inspiring healthier habits & stronger relationships within our community.
You can support the Decatur County Community Garden through monetary donations or by purchasing items from their Amazon Wishlist, linked on their Facebook page. Every contribution – big or small – helps keep this garden growing strong.

The garden is also looking for regular volunteers to help Monday through Friday during business hours (8:00 AM – 4:00 PM). Volunteers can water plants, pull weeds, and turn compost – just stop in at the front office at the Decatur County Health Department to sign in before getting started.
Congratulations to all the partners, volunteers, and community members who made this dream a reality! We can’t wait to see the roots this project will put down – and the harvest of health, knowledge, and connection it will bring to Decatur County.
