State Sen. Jean Leising (R-Oldenburg) made the following statement in response to Gov. Eric Holcomb’s 2023 State of the State address:

STATEHOUSE – “Gov. Eric Holcomb outlined a number of priorities in his State of the State address, including helping more students obtain financial aid for higher education by auto enrolling students into the 21st Century Scholars Program

“In 2022, I authored Senate Enrolled Act 82, which encourages students to see college as an affordable option by requiring high schools to share information and notices about the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) during students’ senior year.

“This session, I want to further help students see college as an available option by authoring Senate Bill 167, which would mandate all students to file for the FAFSA, and legislation that would require Indiana schools to provide information about the 21st Century Scholars Program directly to parents of eligible families.

“Every student in Indiana should have the opportunity to attend college and unfortunately many miss out on that opportunity because of a lack of notice. That’s why it is important for eligible families to know about and easily apply for financial aid opportunities. As a member of the Senate Committee on Education and Career Development, I look forward to working with my peers in the General Assembly to pass this legislation and continue addressing concerns with college enrollment.”
