Stay Safe and Ride Smart: Decatur County Health Department and IDNR Offer Free ATV SafetyCourse

The Decatur County Health Department, in partnership with the Indiana Department of
Natural Resources (IDNR), is proud to announce a free ATV Safety Course aimed at educating youth and
adults on the safe and responsible operation of all-terrain vehicles (ATVs). The event will take place on
Monday, June 23, 2025, from 6 p.m. to 7p.m. at the Decatur County County Health Department,
315 S. Ireland St. Greensburg, IN 47240.
With ATV-related accidents on the rise across Indiana, this hands-on safety course is a timely and
essential program for families who enjoy outdoor recreation. Designed for riders ages 8 and up, the course
will cover crucial topics including protective gear, trail etiquette, emergency response, and state
regulations.
“Our goal is to reduce injuries and save lives by equipping riders with the knowledge and skills they need
to operate ATVs safely,” said Amanda Bates, Public Health Preparedness Coordinator with the Decatur
County Health Department. “Partnering with IDNR gives us access to certified instructors and
comprehensive safety resources.”
Instructors from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources will lead the training in practical classroom
instruction. Participants will learn the importance of wearing helmets, understanding vehicle limitations,
and respecting the environment.
“ATVs can be a great way to enjoy Indiana’s outdoors, but they are powerful machines that require
training and responsibility,” said Sean Durbin, Director of Decatur County Health Department. “This
course provides a strong foundation for safe riding practices.”
Registration is free but required, as space is limited. Parents or guardians must accompany riders under

  1. All participants will receive a certificate of completion and a free helmet, gloves and goggles,
