Tracking cursive writing sent to the Governor

Leising: Bill tracking cursive writing education in Indiana schools passes General Assembly

STATEHOUSE (April 26, 2023) – A bill authored by State. Sen Jean Leising (R-Oldenburg) that would track how many Indiana students are being taught cursive writing is headed to the governor’s desk.

Senate Enrolled Act 72 would require school corporations to report to the Indiana Department of Education on whether cursive writing is a part of their curriculum and at what grade level it is being taught.

“I have pushed for cursive writing to be taught in all Indiana schools for many years,” Leising said. “While this bill does not achieve that, it is one step toward helping the state understand how many kids are not learning this professional skillset and ensuring all Indiana students have the opportunity to learn cursive. I am proud to see it pass the General Assembly.”

SEA 72 was concurred on by the Senate and House of Representatives and now moves to the governor’s desk for his consideration. To learn more about the bill, visit iga.in.gov.
