The Decatur County United Fund is pleased to recognize their outgoing South Decatur High School student board member Makayla Somers. Makayla served her two-year term from June 1, 2023 until May 31, 2025. She has been an active volunteer for the Strawberry Festival and Day of Caring. She was engaged in board governance, policy reviews, fundraising, and volunteer opportunities. At South Decatur, Makayla was active in basketball, volleyball, cheer, student council, FCA, SADD, Key Club, Class President, 4-H Future Builders, Junior Leaders, and Mayor’s Youth Council. She was also recognized as the Decatur County Lilly Endowment Scholarship winner in 2025.
Joane Cunningham, Executive Director, shared, “Makayla is an outstanding student and will do very well at Butler University. The United Fund has been fortunate to have Makayla serve on the board and appreciates her desire to give back to her community. We wish her well in this next chapter of life.”
Makayla Somers commented on her experience, “The United Fund has provided me with an unimaginable opportunity to see more into Decatur County and the things going on behind the scenes, and I couldn’t be more grateful for my time on the board.”
Decatur County United Fund is pleased to announce the addition of Taylor Somers who is currently a Junior at South Decatur High School. Taylor is replacing her sister; a first in United Fund history for student directors. Her involvement includes basketball, volleyball, student council, FCA, SADD, Key Club, Class President, National Honor Society, 4-H, Junior Leaders, and youth choir. Taylor is also a Legal Assistant at Cline King and King PC. She will serve a two-year term from June 1, 2025 – May 31, 2027.
“Taylor will gain greater knowledge of board governance, policies, procedures, finance, and our community during her tenure on the Decatur County United Fund board,” said Cunningham, Executive Director for Decatur County United Fund.
