On August 30, 2026, just after 6:00 pm a fire was reported at 116 E Washington Street, Greensburg, IN. Units from GFD and GPD working together were able to suppress the fire quickly before spreading. Initially, the cause of the fire was said to be an electrical cause. Upon further investigation of the fire debris and video surveillance fire investigators were able to rule out any electrical cause. While the fire still is classified accidental, it was found to be caused by cigarette butts that were improperly discarded.
The fire report has been sent to the Decatur County Prosecutors Office for review of any potential charges.
