Daniel “Dan” Weigel, age 64

Daniel “Dan” Weigel, age 64, of Oldenburg, passed unexpectedly on May 19, 2025, while
vacationing in the British Virgin Islands. Born August 19, 1960, in Batesville, IN, he was the son
of Robert and Edith (nee Suhre) Weigel. Dan lived in the home in which he and his siblings
were raised. He was an integral part of this beautiful village he called home. Dan and his home
were the hub of all things family…Christmas Eve, parades, Freudenfest, church festivals, and
many gatherings on his front porch or village lanai.
Dan was a real estate appraiser and owned his own business, Weigel and Associates. He was
fortunate to make many friends through his work. The real estate agents, lawyers, bank
employees, and fellow appraisers were helpful to and very much appreciated by Dan during his
career. He always joked that he lived in the “business district” in Oldenburg.
Dan enjoyed life to the fullest and because of this had many circles of friends in Oldenburg and
beyond. He was a man of routine…2 walks a day at a specific time for each, his daily stroll to
the Post Office, the Village Store at 7 am on Saturday mornings for a cup of coffee, the farmers
market in the summer leaving Oldenburg promptly at 7:30 so he could beat the crowd and get
the best goods from his favorite vendors.
Dan attended the town council meetings each month to stay informed on the local happenings.
He was on the steering committee for the Freudenfest which brought on another group of dear
friends. The Pearl Street Pub owners and employees were cherished friends where “neighbor
Dan” could be found in his favorite spot for his 11:00 lunch, enjoying dinners, sharing stories,
watering their flowers or shoveling their snow. Dan found great joy during his many vacations
with family and friends at Seagrove Beach, FL.
IU men’s soccer has lost a great follower. Dan and his brother-in-law rarely missed a home
game and attended away games whenever possible. He could be found along the fence rooting
for his favorite Hoosier team along with siblings, nieces/nephews, and his IU soccer family. The
tailgate group for these games became close friends and a second family to Dan. The trip he
was on at the time of his passing was spent with some of this IU soccer family.
Dan is survived by his siblings and their families whom he loved dearly. Survivors are Jan
(Gary) Westerfeld, Doug (Jane) Weigel, all of Oldenburg; Dale (Kelly) Weigel of Iola, TX; Jill
(Hossein) Kajouee of San Francisco, CA; Dave (Linda) Weigel of Greensburg, IN; Jackie (Mike)
Wilhelm of Oldenburg; Dick (Leslie) Weigel of Noblesville, IN; and Jenny (Keith) O’Brien of
Batavia, OH. The nieces and nephews, and their spouses, were lucky to have Dan as a
wonderful uncle and father figure to them. They numbered twenty-eight. The great nieces and
great nephews found great enjoyment playing in Dan’s backyard, rough housing with him,
eating his cookies, fruit, and anything else they could find at his house. That made for a lot of
fun and memories for these twenty-one kids. Dan was preceded in death by his loving parents.
Visitation will be Saturday, June 14, 2025, from 9:00 am – 12:00 pm at Weigel Funeral Home in
Batesville. Mass will follow the visitation at Holy Family Church in Oldenburg at 12:30 pm, with
Fr. John Barker OFM officiating. Dan’s wishes were to be cremated which will occur post
funeral.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Eagle Fire Company or Holy Family Church. For
