David Miers, 74

 David L. Miers, age 74, passed away at the Columbus Regional Hospital on May 30, 2022, after suffering from a cardiac arrest. He was born September 10, 1947, the son of Morgan and Nansi Miers. David was a 1965 graduate of Greensburg High School and received a B.S. in Ag Economics from Purdue University in 1970 where he was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity.

   David is survived by his wife Mary along with her children Stephen (Kimmie) Gauck and Diana (Kevin) Horstman as well as grandchildren Christopher and Addie Gauck and Wesley, Kelly, Gabe, Chad, and Jacob Horstman. David is also survived by his twin sister, Melodi Miers Alessi along with several family members in Wales.

   Upon graduation from Purdue, where he was enrolled in ROTC, David proudly served as a First Lieutenant in the United States Army from 1970-1972.

   David was a dedicated supporter of Greensburg and the Decatur County Community.  He had served as President of the YMCA Board of Directors, the Decatur County Historical Society, the DCMH Foundation, and Board of Zoning Appeals. He was co-founder and past President of MainStreet Greensburg and currently served as President of South Park Cemetery Association. He was a past member of the Greensburg Area Chamber of Commerce, the Decatur County Community Foundation Board of Directors, and the MainSource Bank Board of Directors. David was also inducted into the Greensburg High School Hall of Fame. 

   He chaired numerous community campaigns including the United Fund Annual Campaign, DCMH Capital Campaign, Purdue Ag Alumni Steak Fry, YMCA Major Gifts Division Capital Campaign, as well as Greensburg United Methodist Church Finance Committee and Investment Committee.

   David served as Deputy Commissioner of Agriculture for the State of Indiana. He also was a past chairman of the Indiana State Fair Commission.  

   David was the first inductee into the Decatur County Agriculture Hall of Fame. He was a recipient of the Sagamore of the Wabash, Purdue University Distinguished Agricultural Alumna award, YMCA Volunteer of the year, Decatur County United Fund Volunteer of the Year, Rotary International Paul Harris Fellow award, and Chamber of Commerce Community Service Award. He was inducted into the Purdue University ROTC Hall of Fame and received the Certificate of Distinction from the Purdue Ag Alumni Association. 

   He was President of Miers Farm Corporation and received the State of Indiana Century Business Award. Miers Farm has been operated by the same family since 1824. He received the Prairie Farmer Indiana Master Farmer Award. He served as President of the Indiana Farm Management Association as well as the Purdue Ag Alumni Association and has been a member of the Purdue Alumni Board of Directors.

   Visitation will be held on Friday from 4 to 7:00 p.m.  at the Porter-Oliger-Pearson Funeral Home in Greensburg. Funeral services will be at the Greensburg United Methodist Church on Saturday, June 4, 2022 at 10:00 a.m.  with Pastor Rick Bell officiating.  Burial with military graveside rites will follow at South Park Cemetery.
