Florence Louise Meyers, 94

Florence Louise (Narwold) Meyers, 94, passed away Thursday, January 19, 2023 at St. Andrews in Batesville, Indiana. She was born on January 22, 1928 in Huntersville, Franklin County, Indiana to Harry and Nora (Bornemeier) Narwold.

Florence attended the one room schoolhouse which still exists in the Huntersville area of Batesville Indiana and graduated from Batesville High School in 1946.  She played trumpet for the high school band and never missed cheering on the love of her life, and later Husband, J. Allen (Speed) Meyers as he played on the high school basketball team. They later married on her birthday in 1949.

Florence grew up on the family farm and was part of the “Greatest Generation”, often telling stories of the Great Depression and worrying about her brother Harold during his service in Europe during World War II. Florence always enjoyed visits from family & friends.  Every Tuesday evening for almost 20 years Florence and Speed would play cards with their friends. As the years have passed, Florence was the only one left to tell the stories, keeping alive the memories of her lifelong friends.

Florence was an excellent cook. Many of her dishes were always requested for meals at St. John’s. Her grandchildren always requested her delicious sugar cookies. She also enjoyed quilting and crocheting.  She made many beautiful quilts and table clothes for her children and grandchildren. She jokingly attributed her longevity to good genes, staying busy and watching the “Andy Griffith” show nightly.  Her continued presence was a gift to all who knew her.

Florence was proudly baptized, confirmed, and married at St. John’s United Church of Christ in Batesville. She was incredibly active at church as a Sunday school teacher, a board member, and a choir member. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star 348 as well. She worked for a time at Artmeier-Tekulve Florist before a career in the Hillenbrand Medical Department, where she later retired from.

Florence is survived by her children, Gayla Vonderheide (Mike), Brenda Henkel (Mark), Jay Meyers (Beth), and Linda Wagner (Rob); grandchildren, Joe and Steve Vonderheide, Kary Henkel, Allen, Grant, Taylor, and Chandler Meyers, Jessica Hunt, and Garrett Wagner; and sister-in-law, Carol Narwold.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Nora; her husband, J. Allen (Speed) Meyers; and grandson, Johnathon J. Meyers.

Special thanks to Barb Bridgewater, Sheri Fuller, and Kathy Amburgey. These special ladies kept Florence in her home for several years.
