Mary Lou Pyles (Spurlock), 78

Mary Lou Pyles (Spurlock) of Westport passed away Sunday, June 13, 2021 surrounded by her loved ones. She was born on August 4, 1942 to Richard and Virginia Spurlock in Vernon, Indiana. She married John W. Pyles on May 16, 1964. She had been a Westport resident since 1964. Mary Lou was a 1960 graduate of Vernon High School. She was a worker for Holland Dairy, was an administrative professional for Cummins in Columbus and spent many years at Anderson’s Grocery in Westport. Mary Lou and John spent a lot of their married years renovating houses and fixing up Westport. Mary Lou was a Memaw and Mom to everyone. All were welcome and felt at home on her front porch. Mary Lou’s enjoyments included playing cards with the girls; playing piano, guitar, harmonica, etc.; spending time with her neighbors and cracking witty jokes. Mary Lou also loved watching Game Shows, doing crossword puzzles and enjoying her beautiful house with family and friends. Mary Lou is survived by her three daughters, Rachel Wilkerson (Patrick Duley) of Columbus, Loretta (James) Cantrell of Westport, Suzie (Bryan) Petty of Westport, plus bonus daughter, Kathy (Don) Butz of Greensburg; brother, Joe (Carol) Spurlock of North Vernon; sisters, Katie Nelson and Carol (Don) Layman of North Vernon, Marcia Clarkson of Franklin; her 5 granddaughters, Emily Wilkerson of Seymour, Erica (Omer Nowling) Wilkerson of Hayden, Sydney Petty of Greensburg, Kristen (Quinton) King of Westport, Karah Biddinger of Westport; 2 grandsons, Jacob Fenley of Indianapolis, Trenten Petty of Westport; and her 6 great-grandchildren, Elizabeth, Olivia, Aubree, Jace, Lylah and Elaina. Mary Lou was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; sisters, Dorothy Tompkins and Betty Evelyn Spurlock; brother, Ted Spurlock. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 17, 2021 at the Bass & Gasper Funeral Home in Westport with Rev. Glenn Black officiating. Burial will follow at the Westport Cemetery. The family will receive visitors on Wednesday, from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. We ask visitors to follow social distancing guidelines once inside the funeral home masks are recommended.
