William (Bill) Edward Konkle, 92, of Greensburg passed away on Monday, June 7, 2021 in Greensburg. He was born on June 23, 1928 in Canaan, Indiana to Hanley and Laura (Ralston) Konkle. He was a 1947 graduate of Central High School in Jefferson County. Bill married Mary A. Stevenson on November 16, 1947 and their enduring marriage of 73 years is a sterling example of the institution.
Bill started as a farmer in Jefferson County and worked at the Jefferson Proving Grounds before moving to Greensburg in 1960. Bill worked for Bohn Aluminum from 1960 until his retirement in 1992. Never one to stay still, Bill continued to work in a variety of jobs around town including for Acra’s Dealership and Wenning’s among others. Bill was an integral member of the community of Greensburg as a member of the Lions Club since 1968, Masonic Lodge, first in Bennington, Indiana in 1961 then to Greensburg in 2000, and as an active member of the First Baptist Church. Ever fond of teasing and finding joy in the company of others, after his retirement Bill could often be found at Stories Restaurant for the 2 PM coffee hour.
Bill and Mary raised three children Steven, Jone, and Marsha. Bill is survived by his wife Mary A. Konkle, his children Steven (Hester) Konkle, Jone Scott, and Marsha (Dan) Pollock, grandchildren Mark Scott III, Dr. Mary (Ryan Mahoney) Konkle, Carol (Jonathan) Sundheimer, Kathleen (David) Schieber, and Matthew Pollock, and great-grandchildren Harper and Quinn Sundheimer, William Konkle-Mahoney, and Elias and Anna Schieber. He is also survived by his sister Mary Gommel and sister-in-law Dorothy Green. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Charles (and Marie) Konkle, sister Margaret (and Glenford) Horine, and brother-in-law Jack Gommel.
A visitation for family and friends will be held on Thursday, June 10, 2021 from 11:00 am until the time of the Funeral at 1:00 pm at the First Baptist Church and can be accessed live on the Gilliland-Howe Funeral Home Facebook Page. Reverend Cliff Bunch will be officiating. Burial will follow at the South Park Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to the First Baptist Church or to the Greensburg Lion’s Club.
