Lowering Prescription Drug Costs

Senate Republicans know Indiana residents pay among the highest health care costs in the nation. That’s why this session we have made it a caucus priority to find ways to help lower the cost of care

One avenue for lowering costs is Senate Bill 8, which would help lower prescription drug costs by requiring insurers and pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) to pass on to customers the rebates that the companies negotiate with drug manufacturers.

Lawmakers have become concerned that PBMs are pocketing these rebates, rather than passing them on to patients and the employers who buy insurance for their employees.

This is a major pocketbook issue for Indiana families and employers. When employers have to spend more on insurance for their workers, it directly eats away at how much they can pay in take-home salaries.

SB 8 passed the Senate with bipartisan support and is now with the House of Representatives for further consideration.
