Traffic Safety Day Comes to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway

INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Criminal Justice Institute (ICJI) is shifting safety into high gear with the return of its annual Traffic Safety Day at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Saturday, August 2, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

This free, family-friendly event, made possible through support from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, offers an action-packed day of hands-on activities, expert-led workshops, and meet-and-greets with IndyCar drivers.

“Traffic Safety Day is about empowering Hoosiers to make safer decisions behind the wheel,” said Douglas Huntsinger, executive director of the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute. “By partnering with agencies and experts in traffic safety, we’re offering families and individuals a hands-on, educational experience in one of Indiana’s most iconic venues.

An expansion of ICJI’s Rule the Road teen driving program, this event brings together state and local partners to offer real-world driving simulations, skill-building exercises, and valuable resources for Hoosiers of all ages. Event highlights include:

Interactive Workshops: Learn critical skills through activities like controlled breaking, evasive maneuvering and blind spot awareness exercises. Workshops will also include live demonstrations on seat belt use and the dangers of impaired driving.
Expert Presentations: Hear from industry professionals on a range of essential topics, including distracted driving, child passenger safety, pedestrian awareness, vehicle maintenance, and more.
Meet and Greets: Meet racing professionals and get autographs from Major League Baseball legend Dale Murphy and IndyCar drivers Sting Ray Robb, Conor Daly, Ed Carpenter, Tony Kanaan, Christian Lundgaard, and Josef Newgarden.
Family Activities: Take a lap around the iconic Indianapolis Motor Speedway and meet fan-favorite mascots like Clifford the Big Red Dog, Boomer from the Indiana Pacers, and Freddy Fever of the Indiana Fever.
Community Resources: Connect with local organizations offering free safety tools, educational materials, and support services.Page Registration is not required; however, space is limited for some workshops.
