Virgil E. Meeker, 94, of North Vernon, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, at 6:52 p.m.
The son of Dewey and Sarah (Girt) Meeker, he was born on September 2, 1930, in Jennings County. He married Roberta Litton on January 31, 1962, in Jennings County. They were married 62 years; she survives.
Virgil attended Zenas High School, where he played basketball and was known for his lightning-fast speed. He also attended Nebraska First Church of God. He would sing as often as he could and left a legacy of Faith; he loved the Lord. Virgil worked for Arvin Industries in North Vernon for 38 years. He loved all sports, especially playing and watching golf. In his younger days, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, and woodworking. He sold handmade wooden crafts at various festivals and partnered with his wife and son to own and operate a pallet reselling business.
Surviving with his wife, Roberta, are his children, Phyllis Bush of Columbus, Dewey (Connie) Meeker of Bedford, Carrie (Gary) Ramer of Greensburg, and Virgil (Karen) Meeker II of Vernon; his grandchildren, John Malcomb, Ginger Sims, Wendy Nieto, Adam Meeker, Courtney Larison, Tyson Larison, Paige DeVore, and Hudson Meeker; and several great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Lily Meeker Ellis.
The funeral service for Virgil will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, October 28, 2024, at the Nebraska First Church of God in Nebraska, Indiana. The visitation for family and friends will be held on Sunday, October 27, 2024, from 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Services and one hour prior to the funeral on Monday at the church. Burial will be held at the Butlerville Cemetery in Butlerville, Indiana.
