From the office of Jean Leising:
Unchecked illegal immigration under the Biden administration has led to an increased number of dangerous criminals and illegal drugs in states around the country, not just our border states.
To combat the issue of illegal immigration in Indiana, Gov. Mike Braun announced partnership agreements between several state agencies and federal immigration authorities to remove illegal aliens who are undermining the safety of our communities.
In addition, this session I supported new laws that require county sheriffs to inform ICE if there is probable cause to believe a person who has been arrested for a crime is in the U.S. illegally and make it a crime to register a vehicle or get a driver’s license on behalf of someone who can’t legally drive.
In the Senate, we also supported a bill that would have created a grant program to assist local law enforcement agencies that enter agreements with ICE to help carry out immigration law enforcement duties.
Immigration law is largely an issue that needs to be addressed at the federal level, but I am pleased to have done my part this session in supporting legislation that gives our law enforcement officers more tools to keep our community safe.
