New laws took effect July 1 With summer in full swing, I wanted you to know about a wide range of new state laws that recently took effect.
Most new laws passed during the 2025 legislative session were effective July 1, including the following:Reducing Prices at Large Nonprofit Hospitals Indiana has the sixth highest hospital fees in the nation. A new law will require nonprofit hospitals to charge equal to or less than the statewide average for services in order to maintain their nonprofit status in Indiana by 2029. This will help lower costs for Hoosiers and ensure nonprofit hospitals are focused on delivering affordable care.
Protecting Women’s Sports Ensuring fairness in collegiate sports is essential to protecting opportunities for female athletes. A new law protects the integrity of women’s sports in Indiana by preventing biological males from competing in female categories at state and certain private colleges.
Learn MoreReining in Medicaid Spending Medicaid spending in Indiana has grown by $5 billion in the last four years, ballooning to 22 percent of our state budget. A new law bolsters oversight of Medicaid to prevent fraud and abuse. It strengthens eligibility and accountability measures to ensure tax dollars are used to support those who truly need assistance.
Ensuring Election Integrity A new law ensures only government-issued IDs are accepted at election polls and that voter rolls are properly maintained to remove inactive and deceased voters. It specifies that student IDs, which cannot be used to register to vote, are not an acceptable form of identification at polling places.
