APPLE CAKE!
As we officially enter the “Burr!” months, what better way to warm up than with a slice of home baked goodness. This week’s recipe comes straight from the cherished pages of the Employees’ Cookbook at Decatur County Memorial Hospital—a tribute to the men and women who’ve nourished and served our community since 1922. Submitted by Martha Muckerheide from the Administration team, this Apple Cake is a nostalgic slice of comfort, brimming with diced apples and topped with a rich, caramel-style icing. It’s more than just dessert—it’s a taste of the care, tradition, and hometown flavor that’s been passed down through generations of hospital staff and neighbors alike.
Ingredients for Cake:
1 cup oil
1 tsp cinnamon
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
3 cups diced apples
½ tsp salt
2 cups sugar
1 tsp soda
2 cups flour
½ cup nuts
Mix by hand. Bake at 350 degrees for 60 minutes
Topping:
½ cup brown sugar
½ cup white sugar
1 cup water
1 tsp vanilla
2 tsp cornstarch
1 tsp butter
Cook until thick & pour over cake.
