Greensburg, Indiana – February 26, 2026
Decatur County REMC, in partnership with the Decatur County Community Foundation, is proud to support the safety of local first responders by providing current detectors to volunteer fire departments across Decatur County. Each department received two devices to help enhance safety during emergency response situations.
Current detectors are specialized safety tools that alert firefighters to the presence of electrical current in hazardous environments. These devices help reduce the risk of electrical injury when responding to fires, accidents, and other emergencies where energized equipment or downed power lines may be present.
“Volunteer firefighters put themselves in harm’s way to protect our communities,” said Brett Abplanalp, Decatur County REMC CEO. “Providing continuous voltage detection equipment is one way we can add an extra layer of protection, helping ensure firefighters are alerted to the presence of electricity at all times while serving others. We’re grateful to partner with the Decatur County Community Foundation to make this possible.”
“The community foundation admires all the time and effort that our local VFD’s do to stay informed. The foundation is happy to fund one more safety tool to keep our volunteers and the people they are trying to assist be even safer. We appreciate the REMC bringing this detector to our attention and Board Member Rick Johnson for requesting the grant to supply all of the local volunteer departments with this life-saving device,” said Tami Wenning, Decatur County Community Foundation Executive Director.
By working together, Decatur County REMC and the Decatur County Community Foundation continue their shared mission of strengthening the community and supporting the individuals who serve it.
