MMH recognizes DAISY and BEE award winners

This week, MMH recognized two of its team members for the dedication and compassion they
bring to the workplace. Kayla Kruthaupt, RN received the DAISY Award, an honor presented to
nurses who put patients first in all encounters. Maintenance Mechanic Mike Giltz received the BEE
Award, an honor presented to non-nursing team members whose support also impacts patient care
and outcomes.
The DAISY Award is an international honor established by the family members of J. Patrick Barnes
after he died at the age of 33 from complications of an autoimmune disease. The Barnes family
was inspired by the clinical skills and compassion of his nurses, so they created the award to say
thank you to nurses everywhere.
Kruthaupt was nominated by one of her patient’s family members, who wrote: “During my dad’s
hospitalization, we were truly blessed to have Kayla as his nurse. … Despite having worked all
day, she never let the time on the clock interfere with the compassionate care and attention she
gave. … One moment that left a lasting impression on all of us came when my dad, who was very
emotional about missing his grandson’s wedding, asked Kayla for a hug. … Kayla not only cared
for my dad’s medical needs but also touched his heart and ours in a way we will always be grateful
for.”
At MMH, every member of the team plays an essential role in patient care. For this reason, the
BEE Award was established to recognize non-nursing team members who stand out among their
peers for creating a positive atmosphere at work.
Giltz was nominated by a hospital manager, who wrote: “An exhaust vent in the hospital was not
working and needed to be fixed quickly. Even though Mike was on break, he came over and
repaired the air handler in less than five minutes by replacing the belt. It’s actions like this that give
peace of mind that our hospital is well cared for and when issues arise, they can be fixed quickly.”
The DAISY and BEE awards are presented twice a year, and nominations can be submitted by
anyone, including patients, family members, providers and staff. All nominations are blinded and
sent to an internal committee for consideration. To submit a nomination, visit us online at
