Case involved a pedestrian death


An 8-year sentence handed down recently in Decatur Superior Court in a case involving operating a vehicle while intoxicated causing death as a Level 4 felony. 33-year old Pedro Ramirez-Cuautle of Greensburg was sentenced by Judge Matthew Bailey. 6 of the years will be served in the Indiana Department of Correction with 2 years suspended. A guilty plea was entered into court in late September. Decatur County Chief Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Doug Brown handled the case for the state.

Here is the initial report from Greensburg City Police in the case:

 On January 17, 2022 at approximately 4:25pm Officers from the Greensburg police department were dispatched to the area of Moscow rd. and 11th st. for a report of a crash with unknown injuries.

Greensburg police officers arrived and found a single vehicle crash. Further initial investigation found that the vehicle driven by Pedro Ramirez-Cuautle (32) of Greensburg, IN. left the roadway striking a pedestrian before crossing back over the roadway and striking a pole. 

The pedestrian was identified as Kamryn Smith (23) of Greensburg, IN. Smith was pronounced deceased on the scene by emergency personnel.

Ramiriez-Cuautle was arrested and initially charged with allegations involving driving while suspended, reckless driving, reckless homicide, and operating while intoxicated causing death.
