Greensburg, IN – May 14, 2026 – What began as a shared idea between two physicians became something far greater than either of them imagined.
Over two years, Dr. Jennifer Fletcher and Dr. Polly Moore, two physicians who provide care at Decatur County Memorial Hospital (DCMH), carefully crafted a quilt, one stitch at a time. The design was intricate and thoughtful, reflecting their skill, patience, and dedication. Between long days caring for patients and the demands of their work, time to work on the quilt was limited. Evenings, quiet moments, and small pockets of time became opportunities to continue what they had started together.
What resulted was more than a quilt. It embodied their identity: compassionate caregivers, dedicated collaborators, and advocates for a purpose larger than themselves.
Both physicians have long been advocates for the Hospital Foundation of Decatur County (Hospital Foundation) and the impact it makes possible, from patient comfort enhancements at DCMH to community programs and grants that support the health of Decatur County and all who are served by DCMH. Creating the quilt was Dr. Fletcher and Dr. Moore’s way of contributing in a deeply personal way.
When the quilt was introduced at the 2026 Hospital Foundation Gala, it quickly became one of the most anticipated items of the evening. As the live auction began, the energy in the room shifted. Bidding moved quickly, with multiple individuals and couples eager to take part in the beauty of the piece and all it represented.
As the bidding came to an end, one couple emerged as the final bidders.
But the story didn’t end there.
During the auction, the winning couple noticed someone else bidding with equal determination, DCMH’s Chief Financial Officer, Catherine Keck, and her husband, Larry. The winning couple later learned Catherine had hoped to purchase the quilt not only to support the Hospital Foundation, but also to give it as a meaningful gift to their son, who would be getting married later this year.
In a quiet and generous decision, the winning couple chose to gift the quilt to the Kecks.
Following the Hospital Foundation Gala, the quilt was presented as a surprise. What had once been a competitive moment turned into something entirely different, an act of kindness that reflected the spirit of the evening.
The moment was filled with emotion and joy. Grateful and touched, Catherine accepted the quilt and, in turn, made a generous gift back to the Hospital Foundation, continuing the cycle of giving that had defined the night.
In many ways, the quilt was made of more than fabric and thread. It carried time, intention, and the shared belief that small acts, when woven together, can create something lasting.
From the hands that made it to the room that celebrated it to the gesture that redefined it, this was more than an auction item. The quilt reflects a community that continues to show up for one another.
