Decatur County Community Schools Board of Education Meeting

The meeting opened with the approval of the July 9, 2025, and July 17, 2025, meeting minutes. The board then approved and authorized payment of claims and payroll, six conference attendances and field trips, three resignations, and twelve appointments.

Tim Hollendonner, ND Jr. Sr. High School Principal, presented the Extra Effort Awards to Lisa Bennett (pictured above, Amy Gray, Kasey Waltz, and Natasha Bushorn. Mr. Hollendonner stated that this team of individuals have worked extremely hard to ensure that schedules were completed for the students. He stated that they have assisted him with the process as well and normal start of the year items. He was extremely grateful for their hard work and dedication to the students and staff.

John Corn, ND Elementary School Principal presented the Extra Effort Awards to Kay Schwering, Tricia Crites, Hollie Holland, and Evelyn Bayse. Mr. Corn spoke about a recent medical emergency that occurred at school. He stated that this team of staff worked together to ensure the student was safe and that the emergency responders had everything they needed for the student. Mr. Corn went on to award Jeremy Sherman the Extra Effort Award because he goes above and beyond and has been instrumental in assisting Mr. Corn as he gets comfortable at NDES. Mr. Corn stated that Mr. Sherman has also been assisting with troubleshooting technology issues throughout the school system.

A presentation of the 2026 Budget, Capital Projects Fund & Bus Replacement Plans were presented and we were told when the meetings would occur. The corporation will hold their budget workshop on August 27, 2025 6pm.

The board approved a $1,500 annual stipend for seven staff members who will be traveling between schools, to be distributed at the end of each semester. They also approved seven student fundraisers, accepted donations totaling $1,319.60, and authorized the replacement of seven agricultural tables.

Mr. Hollendonner reported that the school has been working diligently to finalize student schedules, addressing challenges along the way. He praised the office staff—many of whom are new to their roles—for doing an excellent job. He also noted that athletics are in full swing and progressing well.

Mr. Corn shared that NDES earned an award during the Decatur County 4-H Fair Parade and hosted a successful Meet the Teacher night. He enjoyed meeting the students and reported an enrollment of 528, with 195 being transfer students. He said the school year is off to a smooth start.

Mr. Sherman reported that a new student incentive program has been launched and that the preschool program is going well.
