Driver charged in fatal crash that occurred in August

Here is the report from Decatur County Sheriff Bill Meyerrose

On August 16, 2023 at approximately 1:59 PM, the Decatur County Communications
Center received a call advising of a rollover, one vehicle crash near 10268 W. County
Road 100 S.
Upon arrival to the scene by deputies from the Decatur County Sheriff’s Dept. and
members of the Burney Volunteer Fire Dept., it was discovered that the driver of the
vehicle was entrapped in the vehicle and the passenger was deceased.
The driver was removed from the vehicle and flown to St. Vincent’s Hospital in
Indianapolis due to the serious extent of his injuries. The Decatur County Coroner’s
Office was called to the scene to assist with the deceased.
The deceased was identified as 34-year old Danelle Renae Mills from Bartholomew
County, Indiana.
The driver was identified as 32-year old Bearette Nicyle Messina, also from
Bartholomew County, Indiana.
On September 29, 2023, Messina was arrested by deputies of the Decatur County
Sheriff’s Dept. on a charge involving an allegation of causing death while operating a vehicle with a specified amount of alcohol, a Level 4 Felony.

Also assisting at the crash in August were Decatur County EMS, Letts
Fire/EMS, Greensburg Fire Dept., Statflight 2 and the Indiana State Police accident
reconstruction team.
