GREENSBURG, IN — The Friends of the Greensburg & Decatur County Animal Shelter is excited to announce a ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating the official opening of two new Pet Pit Stops in the community. The event will take place on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, at 4:00 p.m. at the Pet Pit Stop located at the Decatur County Annex Building, 315 S. Ireland Street, Greensburg, Indiana.
The Pet Pit Stops were created to provide a pantry-style resource for community members who may be experiencing a temporary tight budget, need assistance making it to their next payday, or simply need a little extra help. The concept is simple: take what you need and leave what you can rather it be pet food, cat litter, toys, or any other non-perishable items.
The project was made possible through the work of Elizabeth Walden, who has been a Girl Scout since the fourth grade and is currently working toward her Girl Scout Gold Award. The Gold Award is the highest and most prestigious honor in Girl Scouting. It is available to Girl Scout Seniors and Ambassadors in grades 9 through 12 and requires the completion of a rigorous Take Action project that addresses a community problem and creates a sustainable, measurable impact.
Walden planned, designed, fundraised for, and built the Pet Pit Stops as her Gold Award project.
One Pet Pit Stop will be located at the Decatur County Annex Building, 315 S. Ireland Street, and the second will be located at the Greensburg-Decatur County Public Library, 1110 E. Main Street, Greensburg. With a third location coming soon.
Walden and the Friends of the Greensburg & Decatur County Animal Shelter will work together to regularly check on the Pet Pit Stops. Community members are welcome to leave items for others and are also welcome to take items they need. The pet pit stops will be filled using donations.
If you would like to monetarily support refilling the Pet Pit Stops please send a check to FOGDCAS P.O Box 302 Greensburg, IN 47240. Please write in the memo line that the donation is for the Pet Pit Stops.
The Friends of the Greensburg & Decatur County Animal Shelter encourage residents to continue making larger donations directly to the shelter, which continues to rely heavily on community support. However, individuals who have a small amount of extra pet food, supplies, or other appropriate items are encouraged to consider donating them to one of the Pet Pit Stops.

We have all seen the success that the food pantries have had throughout the county and we want to mirror that with the Pet Pit Stops.”
The public and members of the media are invited to attend the ribbon-cutting ceremony on Wednesday, August 5, at 4:00 p.m. at the Pet Pit Stop located at the Decatur County Annex Building.
Friends of the Greensburg–Decatur Co. Animal Shelter is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit supporting shelter animals through advocacy, fundraising, and community outreach—helping pets find care, comfort, and loving homes.
