Greensburg Fire Department Annual Recognition Ceremony- 7/17/25

The annual fire department ceremony began with a warm welcome from Mayor Josh Marsh and Fire Chief Nathan Stoermer. Chief Stoermer opened the event by requesting a moment of silence in memory of three individuals—retired or volunteer members—who have passed away since last year’s ceremony.

A heartfelt thank you was extended to the committee members who organized the event: Assistant Chief Ron Reynolds, Inspector Alan Campbell, Firefighter Kevin Wenning, and Firefighter Walker Gabbard.

Several department members were recognized for their recent promotions. Assistant Chief David Eckstein, Captain Jarrod Prentice, Firefighter Jonathan Phillips, and Firefighter Greg Beagle were each honored with their new titles.

Inspector Alan Campbell and Probationary Firefighter Jake Hawkins were also recognized for successfully completing a three-day training course and certification test to become drone pilots. These drones will support a variety of emergency situations, and the department is now equipped to assist other agencies as needed.

The prestigious Firefighter of the Year award was presented to John Hammersmith, for his hard work, dedication, and unwavering support of his fellow firefighters.

The department also welcomed three new firefighters: Jake Hawkins, Justin Miller, and Jerel Simpkins.

As the ceremony came to a close, Chief Stoermer took a moment to honor Assistant Chief David Roszell and Brian Wenning, who were each presented with retirement axes. Chief Stoermer reflected on the vital roles both men played in supporting him when he first joined the department five years ago.

The Chief ended the evening by acknowledging the commitment of firefighter families, noting the demands of the profession—including 24-hour shifts and overtime—and expressing sincere gratitude for their ongoing support and understanding.
