Next Level Trails Groundbreaking- 2/6/25

The City of Greensburg welcomed several community stakeholders to the groundbreaking on Thursday February 6, 2025, at 11 am.

Mayor Joshua Marsh welcomed everyone to the site of the new Walking Trail that will connect Rebekah Park to Pirate Park and to the Greensburg Decatur County Public Library. Mayor Marsh said that in 2026 or 2027 INDOT will be installing a walking path from the end of this walking trail that will link these areas with the downtown district. Mayor Marsh thanked all of those involved in making this opportunity happen.

Dale Brier, Indiana State Parks thanked everyone for attending and said that the funding for this was part of the Next Level Trails Grant that was part of the previous Governor Eric Holcomb’s administration. He said that the grant was for 180 million dollars with 89 trail projects selected with currently 115 miles of walking trails completed.

Teresa Kovachich, Decatur County Parks Department Executive Director said that she is excited to have another amenity to offer the community and to connect wonderful community resources to one another. She added this will only enhance the ability to walk to the Concert Summer Series, play in the park, or just go for a walk with your family.

Tami Wenning, Decatur County Community Foundation Executive Director said that it is an honor to be a part of this opportunity. She thanked all of the community partners. Tami stated that this project was originally started with Lilly Endowment funds, and this helped begin the discussion and planning.

Zach Wirrig, Greensburg Public Projects Director thanked all of those in attendance and complemented the work that has been done to get the project to this point. He stated that the goal is to have construction completed by April. Zach added that he is looking forward to having the library connected to the parks and that this is a positive opportunity.

Mayor Marsh finished by stating that the Greensburg Decatur County Public Library is interested in doing a Reading Trail which would have pages of a book to read as you walk on the path. These would be changed out to allow for new reading opportunities.
