Pre-construction activities to begin for I-74 improvement project in Decatur County

DECATUR COUNTY, Ind. – The Indiana Department of Transportation announces upcoming restrictions on I-74 for a planned interstate improvement project in Decatur County.

On or after Monday, March 9, crews will begin preliminary work on I-74 between County Road 800 West near St. Paul (Exit 123) and State Road 3 near Greensburg (Exit 134), prior to the start of bridge and pavement rehabilitation.

Pre-construction activities include shoulder strengthening work and the construction of maintenance of traffic crossovers that will be used while construction is in progress. Drivers can expect daytime shoulder and single lane closures on eastbound and westbound I-74 for preliminary work through early May, weather permitting.

INDOT will provide additional information and updates as work progresses via INDOT NewsFacebook and X

This work is part of a $74.4 million interstate improvement contract awarded to John R. Jurgensen Company in January 2026. Overall contract work is anticipated to be complete in late 2028.

This work zone on I-74 will be part of INDOT’s worksite speed control pilot program, known as Safe Zones. While Safe Zones signage will be installed while preliminary work is in progress, enforcement will begin at a later date. The start of enforcement will be announced two weeks in advance.

INDOT reminds drivers to slow down, use extra caution, and avoid distractions when traveling in and near work zones. All work is weather-dependent and schedules are subject to change.
