Detective Matt Terkhorn of the Greensburg Police Department has been named the Greensburg Optimist Club’s Law Enforcement Officer of the Year, recognizing his dedication to public safety and his commitment to the community.
Terkhorn was nominated by Staci Schutte for his work at St. Mary’s School, where he serves as a positive presence for students and staff. In addition to helping maintain a safe environment, Schutte noted that Terkhorn regularly participates in school activities and events, building strong relationships with students beyond his law enforcement responsibilities.
During the recognition, Greensburg Police Chief Mike McNealy highlighted Terkhorn’s professional accomplishments and career in law enforcement. A graduate of Columbus North High School and Ball State University, Terkhorn began his law enforcement career with the Indianapolis Airport Police Department in 2009. He joined the Greensburg Police Department nine years ago and has become an integral member of the agency.In 2025, Terkhorn was promoted to Detective and currently serves as the department’s Head Defensive Tactics Instructor, helping train fellow officers and strengthen department readiness.
Outside of his law enforcement duties, Terkhorn is a devoted husband to his wife, Lauren, and father of three children. He remains actively involved in the community through his work with Decatur County Youth Soccer and by assisting the Greensburg High School football team.
The award recognizes not only Terkhorn’s service as a law enforcement officer but also his dedication to making a positive impact throughout the community.
Community members and fellow officers congratulated Terkhorn on receiving the honor and thanked him for his continued commitment to protecting and serving the residents of Greensburg and Decatur County.
