“This Needs to Stop”: Fire Chief Condemns Repeated Arsons After Lake McCoy Blaze

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Incendiary Fire at Lake McCoy

At approximately 10:30 PM on November 2, 2025, Greensburg Fire Department was dispatched to Lake McCoy for a structure fire. Upon arrival, firefighters found the clubhouse building on South Lake Mccoy Drive was fully engulfed. Due to the conditions of the building, firefighters were unable to make entry. A defensive fire attack was performed by firefighters and the fire was brought under control in just less than two hours with four fire departments and two assisting agencies responding to the scene. Thankfully, no responders were injured while fighting this fire.

“Arson is not a victimless crime,” said Fire Chief Nathan Stoermer. “This is not the first, second, or third time a fire at Lake McCoy wasn’t an accident Firefighters risk their lives and safety every time one of these properties is illegally burned. This needs to stop before someone gets hurt or worse.”

If residents wish to dispose of a property through open burning, there is a legal process. Information is available on the Indiana Department of Environmental Management’s (IDEM) website, or contact a local fire department for guidance.

The Greensburg Fire Department would like the thank New Point Volunteer Fire Department, Napoleon Volunteer Fire Department, Letts Community Volunteer Fire Department, Decatur County EMS, Decatur County Sheriff, and Decatur County Emergency Communications for their assistance in the incident.

The cause of the fire has been determined to be incendiary.
