Alan McLaughlin, 75

Alan (Al) R. McLaughlin, a lifelong resident of Greensburg, passed away peacefully at his residence after a lengthy illness on Wednesday, September 14, 2022.
He was born on July 5, 1947, as the son of James R. McLaughlin and Lois (Anderson) McLaughlin. He graduated from Greensburg High School in 1965 where he played varsity basketball and baseball. Al served in the US Army from 1966 to 1968 and was acting First Sergeant in the Army Reserves out of the Rushville, Indiana unit for an additional six years. He was trained in the area of communications as was his father.
In 1968, he married Barbara Starke and they had two children, Debbie and James. Alan enjoyed working on their family farm while attending the Versailles HVAC School. He did two years of apprenticeship prior to opening his own business, Mac’s Electric Co. He and Barbara also owned and operated the Spaghetti Co. in Greensburg. He later became a licensed auctioneer in 1990. Al opened the Rush County Auction in Rushville, IN which he later shared with his son who also became an auctioneer.
Like his parents, Al was involved in community service. He served on the Greensburg City Council and the Board of Works. He also was on the Alcohol and Tobacco Commission. Alan had a strong Christian faith and was a member of the Methodist Church as a youth. He then converted to Catholicism and became a member of St. Mary’s Church after the birth of his children. In 2002, Al married Cindy Baker Middendorf who he shared a wonderful life with and shared many special memories with their family and dear friends. Alan never lost his sense of humor and took on the role of storyteller from his father. Al’s devotion to his family and friends was ever present.
He is survived by his wife, Cindy; daughter, Debbie (Jeff) Snyder; son, James (Christie) McLaughlin; grandchildren, Reagan and McKenzie Snyder, Grant (Savanna) McLaughlin and Garret (Mary) McLaughlin; great grandsons, James, Bearen, Miles, and Fig; stepson Adam (Sarah) Middendorf and step grandchildren, Mackenzie Kovacich and Brinlly and Reece Middendorf. He is also survived by his sister, Sally (Tim) Frykman; mother-in-law Ellen Baker; and brother-in-law, John Baker.
Alan was preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Lois McLaughlin and granddaughter Kortney Snyder.
Visitation will be held on Monday, September 19, 2022, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Porter-Oliger-Pearson Funeral Home in Greensburg. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am on Tuesday, September 20, 2022, also at the funeral home with Pastor Ray Sweet officiating. An additional hour of visitation will be held before the funeral service begins. Interment will be held in the Paul Hill Cemetery in Saint Paul.
