Dennis Raymond Herbert, 93, of Westport, passed away at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 10, 2021 at the Aspen Place Health Campus in Greensburg. He was born on July 8, 1928 in Decatur County, the son of Henry and Elizabeth (Young) Herbert.
He has been a lifelong resident of Decatur County and had served with the Indiana National Guard. He had worked for Bohn Aluminum for 15 years, he owned Westport Lumber & Tractor Sales from 1978–1985, was a school bus driver for Decatur County Community School from 1985-1992 and owned Herbert Excavating. He was a member of the Mt. Aerie Baptist Church and former member of the Westport Community Volunteer Fire Department where he has served for over 20 years. Dennis was a pilot and enjoyed flying and riding his motorcycle. He married Irene Carol Tichenor in Louisville, Kentucky on April 17, 1948 and she survives, along with his daughter, Diana (Jay) Clark of Osgood; his sons, Darol Lee (Judy) Herbert of Westport and Perry (Deborah) Herbert of Greensburg; his brother, Lotus Herbert of Greensburg; his 6 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren and 1 great-great granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters, Edna Minary and Dorothy Herbert; his brothers, Harry Herbert, Clarence Herbert, Paul Herbert and Robert Herbert. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. on Monday, November 15, 2021 at the Bass & Gasper Funeral Home. Burial will be at the Union Baptist Cemetery. A time of visitation will be held on Monday from 12:00 P.M. until time of service at 2:00 P.M. We ask visitors to follow social distancing guidelines and masks are recommended.
