Howard Melvin Hamer, 90, of Milroy. Passed away at 2:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 29, 2022 at his son’s residence. He was born on November 15, 1931 in Decatur County, the son of Charles E. (John) and Ethel (McGee) Hamer. He retired from the Muncie Bread Company after 37 years of service. He had also worked for Joe O’Mara Poultry and Meadow Gold Milk Company. Mel was a veteran having served in Korea with the US Army. He married Shirley A. Downey on January 13, 1952 at the Union Baptist Church. She preceded him in death on July 11, 2019. He is survived by his sons; Randy (Sally) Hamer, Ron (Mary) Hamer, Brian (Tracy) Hamer and Bruce (Kathryn) Hamer, all of Greensburg; 13 grandchildren; 36 great grandchildren; 5 great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; step mother, Mary Hamer; brothers, Charles Robert and Floyd Earl Hamer and a sister in infancy Dorothy Evelyn Hamer. Funeral services will be conducted at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, February 4, 2022 at the Bass & Gasper Funeral Home with Dr. Robb Barlow officiating. Burial will follow at the Union Baptist Cemetery with Military graveside rites. A time of visitation will be held on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until time of service at 12:00 p.m. We ask visitors to follow social distancing guidelines once inside the funeral home and masks are recommended.
